Electric and Hybrid Vehicles Reach Record 49% Share of New Australian Car Sales

Record-breaking quarterly figures from the Australian Automobile Association show that electric and hybrid vehicles hit an all-time high of 49.16 per cent market share in Q2 2026, putting electrified powertrains on the brink of officially overtaking traditional petrol and diesel models across Australia.

The surging demand highlights the rapidly changing landscape for Australian car buyers as fuel costs shift consumer preference toward lower-emissions transport.

Explosive growth in a short time

According to the latest AAA EV Index, pure Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) sales more than doubled between Q1 and Q2 2026, climbing from 34,435 units up to 69,414 vehicles nationwide.

That sharp rise propelled BEVs to a record 21.03 per cent share of all new light vehicle sales, marking the largest quarterly increase in all-electric adoption ever recorded in Australia.

Internal combustion engine (ICE) models dropped to their lowest share on record at 50.84 per cent, down significantly from 64.23 per cent earlier in the year.

Key models driving demand

The rapid shift is most visible in Australia's highest-volume category, the Medium SUV segment, where BEVs have officially taken over as the leading fuel type, claiming a 37.30 per cent market share.

Popular models including the Tesla Model Y and the BYD Sealion 7 have spearheaded this growth, while plug-in hybrid (PHEV) options like the BYD Shark 6 ute continue to gain strong traction among buyers seeking dual-fuel capability.

Expanded model availability and increased competition have brought entry-level EV options under $40,000 AUD, significantly lowering the barrier to entry for everyday consumers.

Leadership and market strategy

Industry groups attribute the sudden acceleration to expanding national charging infrastructure, better vehicle supply, and elevated fuel costs driving Australians toward lower running costs.

The growing second-hand market has also reflected strong consumer confidence, with used EV sales surging 54.6 per cent year-on-year across the first half of 2026, according to figures reported by EV Infrastructure News.

Continued expansion ahead

With total quarterly new light vehicle sales reaching a record 330,111 units, total EV and hybrid adoption expanded fast enough to offset falling petrol and diesel volume entirely.

Automotive analysts expect electrified options to comfortably cross the 50 per cent threshold before the end of the year as additional budget-friendly models and ute variants arrive in local showrooms.

What this milestone means

Reaching nearly half of all new car sales marks a historic turning point for Australia's automotive industry, demonstrating that electric and hybrid vehicles have fully transitioned from a niche segment into mainstream market dominance.

The rapid pace suggests competition will only intensify further as legacy automakers and emerging Chinese brands introduce next-generation platforms to meet surging Australian demand.
